| January 5, 2000, InterSystems USA Inc. recently won the contract for the Portland (Maine) International Jetport (PWM). Since 1934, the Jetport has offered a gateway for travelers in the Greater Portland Area and recently invested approximately $2 million on improvements including a new entranceway to the Jetport and an upgrading of the IT environment.
"InterSystems was chosen for their FIDS (Flight Information Display Systems) technology which gives the passengers the most up-to-date, accurate and user-friendly information available", said Jeff Schultes, Jetport Manager. The system also involves the installation of two main servers, one operating in a standby mode at all times, full integration with 30 intelligent and GMC powered monitors, a full subsystem of gate LEDs, in addition to a similar baggage claim subsystem. All monitor displays utilize InterSystems "location centric" module, which places flights in alphabetical order based on originating point or destination for simplistic use by all passengers. "It's nice to be able to tell when my sister's flight is coming. Before, I had a hard time reading the screen. I like the colors and the airline names [logos]," said one of Portland's passengers. In addition, all monitors feature InterSystems' Visual Paging subsystem, displaying normal airport pages and emergency messages in written text for hearing impaired passengers, as stipulated by the American's with Disabilities Act. Furthermore, and most unique about the PWM implementation, is the direct interface with FAA radar data once a flight is airborne. Travelers will receive up to the minute flight status on terminal monitors, or from the convenience of their home or laptop PC via the internet. Additionally, travelers will be able to benefit from an IVRS (Immediate Voice Response System), allowing them to dial in to a local Jetport number, enter flight data via telephone keys, and receive similar, up-to-date flight information.
